With this widespread knowledge, we are often able to get ahead of difficulties, obstructions, and conflicts before construction ever begins.
Engineering firms can often “over engineer” a project to raise the cost to improve their margins, or simply due to a lack of real world construction knowledge in an attempt to avoid the same difficulties, obstructions, and conflicts. A few prime examples of this would be when a road bore is designed 15 feet deep to go under all other utilities when a clear path may be present at 4-5 feet deep, when meters and backflows are added that are not required, when meters are added to place a fire hydrant on property that can easily be placed in the right-of-way for much cheaper.
